Religion 261 - Introduction to Family History
We will now begin the Religion 261 online course provided by BYU. You will do this by clicking the link found at the bottom of this post. Before you do so, I like you to take note of the following :
Once you click into the online course, you will basically get into the website designed by BYU which will have its own menu of lessons and instructions to follow. From the BYU online website, you will find that it will sometimes use another website by FamilySearch organization who have their own lessons and instructions. (eg. when focused on the PAF) The reason is that the BYU lessons do not cover everything and therefore you are expected to use BOTH the FamilySearch Internet lessons and the BYU lessons.
Overall the online lessons provided is very informative and useful for those who are experienced in using the computer, the internet and PC softwares. But for the novice user, you may be easily lost either in terminology or just the movement from one webpage to another. It is for this reason that this coaching website was designed. It has a logical step by step approach of teaching Family History Work as well as the computer technology that is being used. It also has a live coach to answer your questions left in the comments of each post and who monitors each participant as to their level of progress from the feedback given in their comments.
You may find yourself ahead of others in following the BYU lessons combined with the FamilySearch lessons or you may be behind. Either one is fine as long as you progressively post your feedback through the comments of each post when you can complete the assignment contained in it.
For this post, enter your comments to give feedback when you have accomplished the 3 exercises below or part of it: (Family consultants who have a fast broadband internet connection are requested to do both 2 and 3 as an exercise to gain experience so that you can show others how to do it when the time comes.)
1. Downloaded and installed Adobe Acrobat Reader to your computer
2. Downloaded and installed the PAF software from the internet and installed it to your computer (Recommended only if you are on a fast broadband connection. Those with dial up internet connection should not waste time and use option 3 below.)
3. Installed the PAF software from the CD to your computer.
The first part of the online lessons will be guiding you to achieve the above.
If you are truly seeking to be coached in this website, please don't tell me when you see me that you've read each post and understood everything or done everything but just didn't bother to enter your comment! Remember we need the interaction, the more lively the better especially when we are now getting to the more technical part of the coaching track.

I've done all the 3 exercises. Successfully downloaded from the church website & as well as installed using the CD.
When I enter the individual record using my chinese name, Lee Siew Mei, my surname will end up as Mei.
Which is the best way to key in our chinese names?

Well Done! For the names format, always just use the slash(/)sign to wrap your surname. In your name it will be /Lee/Siew Mei.
You can have your surname Lee come before Siew Mei or after by entering your choice in Tools/Preference command. Try it.
I find there is alot of materials loaded in one lesson and to do those exercises.Since I have not completed reading the materials,besides having to get my geneaological facts from my history, I may have to delay comments. But i am writing this to let you know my predicament.

I've completed the 3 exercises. I'll be having aid from my son since I'm having difficulty in Internet Technology or online education.
Just to let you know that I'll do my best to learn from my son about this software. And I'll pray for it.

FHC computers already have preinstalled Acrobat Reader, PAF,
PAF software from CD to computers done. Following Religion 261 lessons online and will continue to do so. I can only work at FHC
computers after patrons have gone.

Ok a few of you have already started on the BYU 261 online lessons and given some general feedback. I'm looking for detailed feedback as you attempt each lesson.
Many of us are overwhelmed by so much information given to us that we are sometimes paralyzed as to where to begin. Yes the BYU online lessons are 'step-by-step' but maybe not simple enough for those without sufficient computer usage skills that it assumes users have.
Read the next posting from me as to how this blog will make it even more 'step-by-step' for real beginners! You just have to follow and respond to each post in this blog and get the detailed help that you may be looking for.
