Let's stretch our imagination and share our Vision

So you have been called as the Branch Family Consultant and like all faithful members, you accepted it as a manifestation of your willingness to serve. Very soon you find that this calling is unlike others you have been called before. There has not been a precedent to this type of calling before in our District and for the few of us who have been called for some time, we may be running into a wall as to how we can effectively serve. The additional factor that may discourage some from becoming effective in this call is the increasing usage of computers in family history work.

The purpose of this 'blog' is therefore a vehicle to get us going and be able to make a difference in the family history work of our District. I will be your official personal coach to guide you to success and it starts from your participation in this 'blog' or special website which facilitates communication with all family consultants. You will also receive communication from me via SMS and the phone from time to time to give you the additional attention that you may need but if you are able to visit this 'blog' regularly, other forms of communication may not be necessary except for an actual meeting of the group for hands on experience and discussion at the Family History Centre.

So lets warm up with some dialogues going and use your imagination for a few minutes to share your thoughts in the comments for this posting. Share with us what is your Vision as to what you can learn and do from this blog and how you can make a difference to others in doing their family history work?

For a start click here to watch a general presentation that makes us ponder about the past and the future. After viewing, please share your Vision or feelings after watching the presentation. (You can close the presentation window after viewing it by clicking on the X at the top right of the screen to return to this window and click the 'comments' link to share your thoughts after reading the other comments.) You can proceed to left click at the link above that says 'click here' to view the presentation.

My need is to gain access to the Fam. History programs in the Centre and the know-how of its operations. Practicality is more important than theory. I also want to meet and discuss with one enthusiast one Sunday on her great interest in this work at our Centre. It is most amazing that a non-Church member has so much enthusiasm of the importance of this work whereas, members do not generate much interest to use the centre as provided, even we do know its eternal perpsective value. Are we in our comfort zone of Laissez-faire?

Thanks Anthony, I understand your needs and we will do our best to help you. Can you share with us your VISION of what you think you can learn through this website and how you think you can make a difference to others through the new knowledge you will gain?

Family History work falls under the category of Important but Not Urgent. It's value is just like health, everybody takes it for granted and very few make the effort to exercise or have a proper diet. Everyone's busy chasing after something else and take what we have for granted.

So as Family History Consultants, how can we Make a Difference to Others? Our Vision needs to be larger than those we are trying to help or we will end up in the same comfort zone! Let's put our thinking caps on, expand your horizons and share with us what you Visualize can happen?

Just a reminder to all to read carefully each posting and if you are new, read from the bottom up. Don't forget to click on the words 'click here' while you are online to view the presentation that is prepared. Then follow up with your comments.

Oh Thanks Josephine. I am glad you are getting help from others and we can all learn together. So far you are doing well as your comments are coming in and we are having a diaglogue in this website. This is the basic for all family consultants to begin with and that is to be able to communicate with me in this website.

For all those who have not been able to get in earlier and have just come in, be aware that the computer server that takes care of our website gets very busy at certain peak times. It is like a busy signal when someone is using the phone. You therefore just need to try to get in some other time.

Remember, keep trying and never give up, that is the road to SUCCESS!

I think this is an excellent idea to assist all the F/History consultants as we're still new in this work.
Thank you for your great idea Bro. Chong. Let's work together to accompolish the work of Family History.

Thanks anonymous but I wish your identity could be known. Please choose the identity of 'Other' by putting your mouse pointer on the circle next to it(known as a radio button) and left click the mouse instead of choosing 'Blogger' or 'Anonymous'. Once you choose 'Other', the box(known as field) for 'Name' will appear for you to key in your name that will appear for this commment. Since you chose 'Anonymous' you will notice that your comments started with 'anonymous said' instead of your name had you chosen the radio button for 'Other'

Can you try again by choosing 'Other' this time? Please do it for the comment link at the bottom of the posting dated Saturday April 16 as your 'Anonymous' comment was done on the comment link for the posting dated Friday April 29.

All family history consultants have been advised at the the very top of this website below the title page to read from the bottom oldest posting and work your way upwards, submitting at least one comment per posting so we know you have read that posting and from your response I can determine if you did understand the instruction in that date's posting. Example, I need to ask 'anonymous' if you did click and watch the presentation before typing your comment as that was the exact instruction in the posting of Friday April 29.

Please note that my instructions or comments are lengthy and descriptive to help everyone follow the right steps correctly. In computer usage, following exact steps is very important or you end up leading some where else or find that the program does not work the way you want it to. I may use lay man's language to describe something on your screen which has a technical term which I will always include in brackets, example : (known as radio button)

Remember, the secret of success is just keep trying even if you made mistakes as no harm is done! It is the familiarity and overcoming the fear of learning something technical is the first thing I like all of you to achieve. Keep coming back over and over again and begin to ask questions for things you may be confused or puzzled about ok?? Try to keep your dialogue here active by entering more comments and reading my response to every comment you send in. Once the flow is started, our communication will be smoother and others can read what has transpired and learn from it too!

Has anyone viewed the general presentation and did you have any comments or problem trying to view it?

Please give your feedback on it.

About the presentation given (it is not prominent enough for us to see it),
my comment on "strong enough to take criticism"...it would be more encouraging to say--"strong enough to take evaluation from others".
Thanks,
Anthony Lim.

Ok Everyone. Please note that there is a presentation hidden in the posting of April 29. In the words 'click here' which is coloured slightly different from the other words, move your cursor to touch it and you can see that it changes from an arrow to the hand symbol. This means there is a link to another page so click it once to connect to it.

I'm afraid the color difference is controlled by the program and I cannot make it bright red in color to become more obvious. The lesson to learn in working with computers is learn how to read carefully and know where key words or buttons are. Unlike reading a book, a computer screen is more interactive and you need to be curious to click at highlighted areas to lead you to more information.

Please view the presentation and give your comments related to it eg.how does the message make you feel about the urgency of doing important things which we think we don't have time for.

After viewing the slides presentation, I deeply felt sorry and sad towards the tsunami victims. As I ponder about the past and future, it really makes me feel that we should always use our time to the fullness. We should always appreciate what other people had done for us and think what we need to do during our life-time .... "Before reaching to others, first to our family".

Viewing the tsunami slides makes me very sad. I feel very sorry for the victims. It made me realise life is very fragile and I must give priority to do the
Lord's work.

I did view the slides when they were first posted but was too overwhelmed to make any comments!
A lot of guilt feelings came upon me as to the things I should be doing but left undone. Maybe I just didn't want to face the fact that life is indeed fragile and I'm reminded of the eternal perspective. So it really makes me feel I should be doing more family history work and "put things in order". As for my vision, I'll go for the immediate.... Learn first so that I can share with others.

Thanks for your comments.

Yes life is so fragile but yet we sometimes just take things for granted. We think we have all the time in the world or could always do it later. We all do that at some point in time.

Sometimes its due to our preoccupation with something. When we have a focus to achieve something we forget about other important things that are less urgent and procrastinate them.

Other times, things could be going well for us and we feel lazy to do that which takes effort and postpone that also. I'm guilty of all the above in my life.

And then after all the procrastination, we might fall into a guilt trap which only further cause us to stay further entrenched in our comfort zone.

The solution is getting the Spirit into our lives. It comes from prayers, from reading the scriptures, from sheer repentance and our willingness to renew our commitment to keep all of the Lord's commandments.

Let's help one another to get and keep the Spirit through this divine family history calling!
